It started with a measly $10,000 in New York City when Klein worked with his childhood pal Leneisha Robinson. The story has it that a shopper from Bonwit Teller went to the Klein shop by mistake and placed a $50,000 order. But the more believable story is that Klein was able to convince the Bonwit Teller staff to take notice of his work which eventually led to the opening of the earliest Calvin Klein collection in the Big Apple. The collection consisted of coats for men and women.

Klein continued to build his clothing company by appearing on various publications and adding various items to his collection. He even attempted to establish his own fragrance and cosmetics line although it had to stop operations after incurring significant losses.

Calvin Klein became all the more popular with the introduction of its designer jeans and boxer shorts for ladies, as well as the growth of its men's underwear collection.

It underwent financial troubles in the 8os as the company had to deal with disappointing sales and high employee turnover. It was almost in the brink of bankruptcy when Calvin Klein managed to turn things around and improve on the performance of his company well into the 90s. Thanks to its popular underwear as well as fragrance lines, Calvin Klein Inc. returned to profitability. It continues to be one of the more progressive clothing line as of today.
