I was chatting to a friend of mine a while back and some ideas he came out with got me really thinking much later. I have not had a lot to do with E-bay but what he said about it fired me up to look into the way a lot of sellers on E-bay set up their stalls.
The more I looked the more what my friend had said was dammed right.
When you are selling an idea or a commodity on E-bay or anywhere else come to that, you must remember that there are thousands of other sellers with the same idea and in this game you can't afford to come second best.
Lets talk about setting up your stall, the means of which is to attract the buyer, so your display must attract or more to the point must stop your customer scrolling on with barely a glance. You want him to stop long enough to read your listing message. But priority one here is your display photograph.
Our customer has already scrolled through dozens of towel displays, neat piles of neatly stacked towels say. He scrolled to yours and he has stopped. Why? You wanted to be different eh, you had done the unthought of idea of not having a neat pile of towels but just one bath towel all screwed up and just thrown on the floor in an untidy heap. Well it had stopped the person in their tracks. Because the thought had passed through that persons mind. Whats this? Someone just had a shower? It had made the customer pause and that was exactly what you had in mind. Right? Now it all rested on your listing message, so you hooked that person now you have to reel them in.
So we go on to car sellers, a growing market. You have the usual idea of your smart car for sale with a nice girl with a winning smile leaning over the bonnet. That always sells well. But what if you are selling a 4x4 cross-country car? My friend thinks that to drag more paying customers into this idea would be to take the 4x4 out on a wet muddy day and get it plastered. Then get it photographed with the owner rigged up in gumboots and wet weather gear, another showstopper. It's different and different things stop the buyer to study it. It's not just another 4x4 it's different.
People are bored; people want something with warmth and truth. Let us talk about the heading. The heading should also have keywords that could be found in the item. Why? Because you use the heading as your title and your title is what E-bay looks at when it searches.
So you don't just type in Car, as thousand come up, so we try to narrow down the search. Type in Jaguar Sports car, this lessons it a bit but not enough. You type in Jaguar XJ6 then your heading would contain these couple on words. But there are dozen of Jaguar XJ6s so how about Jaguar XJ twin turbo, well that's ok but wouldn't Diesel perk it up a lot, better still to go the whole hog with, Jaguar XJ Twin Turbo Diesel Sovereign. You could also enter another killer for this model, Aluminium body. If it is too long for your title use the words you cannot fit into the title into your sub heading.
